At times
I like to remind myself that we are floating on a space rock in a universe so vast as to be functionally infinite,
where time in either direction stretches so far past the limit of human comprehension it’s almost l aughable,
Where the notion of time itself breaks down the further one travels from the known,
Where the fundamental building blocks of our universe are called into question,
Where the vast majority of speculated matter in the universe is completely unaccounted for, a mystery to which we can currently only hypothesize on,
A universe wh ere there are black holes with the mass of a billion suns,
Event horizons past which light itself cannot escape,
A universe where on the cosmic scale o ur life-giving star is a grain of sand compared to an ocean,
A universe where our solar system is but one of tens or even hundreds of billions in our galaxy,
A galaxy whose siblings potentially number in the trillions,
Each one among these trillions so vast as to take light hundreds of thousands of years to travel from one end to the next,
The distance between any of these galaxies an order of magnitude greater still, so far apart that billions of years could pass by before light could make the journey across the void,
A universe that is at once both standing still and sprinting, all dependent upon the scale chosen,
A universe where all of this has gone on— and will continue to do so—with or without a single one of us.
Where even this unfathomable universe may just be one thin thread of a massive tapestry, intertwined with a billion times a billion more,
And even from the safety of our backyards—as we wait out a virus running through our communities, watch an economy tank—we can stare up into the night sky and view visions of the past play out on a million different stages. A past that predates the very existence of humanity.

Actually, we're 500 years old, put here by God and the sun orbits the earth

One of my good friends told me recently that he doesn’t believe in evolution, and then tried to tell me about the historical proof behind Noah’s Ark. You know, that story where God gets pissed off and sends a flood to kill everything he made in a f it of rage . When asked how the Ark fit the total mass of two animals of every species, my friend told me that “based on historical evidence, it was very large”.
This dude is supremely competent at whatever he tries, the person I’d choose to have my back in any situation, the guy I’d 100% know could step into any job and effortlessly take charge and get things running a million times better than they were.... And yet....
Religion.
I guess in the face of the unknown, it would be comforting to believe in a higher power watching over everything?

TL;DR -
“ Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.” - Douglas Adams

I really, really need to read that book someday. As a Sci-fi/fantasy guy, general science fanatic, and lover of books I feel like I’m failing my upbringing

You really, really are. Althoiugh the BBC TV series (available on Hulu and Amazon, ac cording to Wiki) is an acceptable alternative - the books translates well to TV as it was originally written as a radio play.

It’s foundational and a good read for right now.

A little heavy after a day of social distancing and an evening of three margheritas that were very light on mix. But I can still appreciate the effort that went into it. Stay safe.

First thing I thought. That and the alternate universe where Zaphod really is the most important thing in it.

Where every dot in this pic is a galaxy. This is just one little section of sky.

That was a great video. I did not know our own galaxy cluster was situated in the center of the largest void in the universe.

See we are special after all.
Its captivating that one can make meaningful measurements in number of galaxy’s per unit of space, or that a void can be over 1,000,000,000 light years across

If you ever have the time in all this craziness and want to sit down for two hours... This is such a great video.

The whole trilogy in five parts is an easy read and pretty funny. I highly recommend it .

Some people find the sheer scale of the universe heartening and life affirming while others are scared witless by the sheer indifference of it all. And more than a few have a healthy combination of both of those outlooks. But the worst of people are those that think "that's bullshit".
